How to get to Gaharu Guest House in Temangan
GPS Coordinates of Gaharu Guest House is N 5.7142116, E 102.1543628
If you are travelling by TRAIN
Gaharu Guest House is located ONE KM from the Jungle train station called TEMANGAN. There are two lines of express Jungle Trains. First, The Ekspres Wau intercity train serves destinations between Kuala Lumpur and TUMPAT, the northernmost station on the North East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Second, The Ekspres Timuran runs between Singapore and TUMPAT. Although both express trains do not stop at TEMANGAN, do not despair. The good news is these express trains do stop at the next nearby main station TANAH MERAH, located about 15 minutes away from TEMANGAN by car or taxi.
Train tickets may be purchased on line from this link.
There is another type of Jungle train that we call "the Local Trains" as opposed to "express trains". These Local Jungle Trains run between KUALA LIPIS (in the state of PAHANG) or GUA MUSANG (in the state of KELANTAN) and TUMPAT (the northern most station in KELANTAN). They DO STOP at TEMANGAN station, one KM from The Gaharu Guest House.
Persons who are visiting the Taman Negara or National Park at Kuala Tembeling in PAHANG may take the train from MERAPOH to TEMANGAN. I believe Local Train tickets can only be purchased at the train stations.
Visitors from KOTA BHARU may go to TEMANGAN with the Local Train. The nearest train station serving Kota Bharu is WAKAF BARU. The Local Train ride from WAKAF BARU to TEMANGAN is about one hour.
If you are travelling by BUS
Alternatively, from KOTA BHARU, one may take the bus first to MACHANG, and then take a shared-taxi to TEMANGAN. At Temangan you will be crossing a railway track. After the crossing, take the natural curve of the road towards the left. Drive about 300 meters, Look on your right for a three-storey concrete building. Gaharu guest house is in that building.
Shared taxi fare with 4-passengers is 4 times cheaper than if one takes the taxi ride alone. Currently taxi fare between MACHANG and TEMANGAN is RM10.00 and if you are sharing with three other passengers, the fare is RM2.50. Please beware that in Malaysia, there are unlicensed "taxis" that the local folks call them "taxi private sapu". Their cars are not painted "yellow and red". If you want to accept their services, be sure to negotiate the fare with them first before taking the ride. Sometimes they ask for double the normal fare for the reason that their return trip is empty without passengers. Some unsuspecting visitors may assume that they are giving you a free "lift" or "ride" similar to hitchhiking. Do not assume so unless you are sure that the person is truly giving you a free ride to your destination. There is unfortunately no bus-service between MACHANG and TEMANGAN.
With sufficient prior notice, arrangements could be made to pick guests from KOTA BHARU, WAKAF BHARU, TANAH MERAH, MACHANG or TEMANGAN stations.
Visitors travelling by Bus from any where in Malaysia may disembark either at the towns of MACHANG or TANAH MERAH, both of which is about 15 minutes by car or taxi to Gaharu Guest House. Similarly, pick-up arrangements can be made with sufficient prior notice.

After Kuala Krai, you would be passing through villages such as Gucil, Telekong, Kg Bunut, Kg Pek, Setor Lama and BT 31. Once you pass BT 31, watch out for TEMANGAN sign-post at the next village called BT 30. TURN LEFT at BT 30 and TEMANGAN is only an eight minute drive from there. Drivers coming from the west along the East-West Highway via the Gerik-Jeli-Tanah Merah-Machang route, Temangan is accessable easily. After Jeli, do not take any turns into Tanah Merah town, but drive through towards Machang. Less than 0.5 km after passing Tanah Merah town, you would cross a bridge across the Kelantan River. Immediately after crossing this bridge, take the very first left turn, and follow directions first towards PALOH RAWA, and then towards TEMANGAN. After passing Paloh Rawa, if you are driving a nornal sedan car, van, or 4-wheel drive other than buses or big lorries, drive straight ahead at the junction. It will eventually take you through a narrow bridge. Drive on until you meet a t-junction. You have reached Temangan. At that t-junction take right towards Kerela, cross the railway track. After the crossing, take the natural curve of the road towards the left. Drive about 300 meters, Look on your right for a three-storey concrete building. Gaharu guest house is in that building.
Kelantan state is also accessable from a popular destination, the cool CAMERON HIGHLANDS. On the North-South Highway either north-bound or south-bound, you may exit the highway at SIMPANG PULAI in the state of Perak. From this exit drive towards Cameron Highlands. Near Cameron Highlands look for roadsigns towards GUA MUSANG and drive in that direction. From Gua Musang you may either take the Kuala Krai-Machang-Kota Bharu route or the Jeli-Tanah Merah-Machang route. To take the second route, make a left turn towards Jeli about 3 km BEFORE reaching Gua Musang. Directions to go to Gaharu Guest House in Temangan from either of these two routes are given in the paragraphs above.
For those driving from KUALA TERENGGANU towards KELANTAN state, watch out for the East-West Highway after you have passed JERTEH, a town in the state of Terengganu, but is near the border to Kelantan state. About 5 KM after JERTEH, (but before reaching the town of Pasir Puteh) this Highway can link you towards the West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia to GERIK and PENANG. When you see the sign "MACHANG, JELI, GERIK", TURN LEFT into this Highway and drive through. At the 1st or 2nd traffic light at MACHANG, take a LEFT TURN towards KUALA KRAI. You would be passing through villages of KEMUNING, PANGKAL PETAI, AYER HIJAU and JAMBU LAWAR. At Ayer Hijau or Jambu Lawar watch for TEMANGAN sign-post. When you see the right-arrow TEMANGAN sign-post at BT 30, take a RIGHT TURN. It will take you to GAHARU Guest House in 8 minutes. At Temangan you will be crossing a railway track. After the crossing, take the natural curve of the road towards the left. Drive about 300 meters, Look on your right for a three-storey concrete building. Gaharu guest house is in that building.
See you there and enjoy your holiday.
